Artist, designer and illustrator, Reginald John ‘Rex’ Whistler was born in Eltham, Kent. He studied at the Royal Academy and at Slade School of Art. His successful career as a professional artist brought him to Plas Newydd, Anglesey – then home of the 6th Marquess of Anglesey.
It’s thought that during his time at Plas Newydd, Whistler become the lover of the Marquess’ eldest daughter, Lady Caroline Paget. He painted many portraits of her – several of which can be seen at the permanent exhibition at Plas Newydd, along with his masterpiece, a 58 feet wide painting in the dining room. Whistler was killed in action during World War II – The Times newspaper reported more responses to his obituary than to any other of the war.
