One of the 20th century’s greatest statesmen, David Lloyd George was born in Manchester and raised in Criccieth, on the west coast of North Wales. His work as a young solicitor secured a local reputation as a stalwart defender of the poor and in 1890 he was voted Liberal MP for Caernarfon (a seat which he would hold for more than 50 years).
In 1908 he became Chancellor of the Exchequer to Herbert Henry Asquith’s government, and was responsible for passing the ‘people’s budget’ of 1909. During the First World War he was appointed Minister of Munitions and in 1916 Secretary of State for War. Later that same year Lloyd George replaced Asquith as Prime Minister, a position he held until his resignation in 1922. He remained in parliament for the next two decades and was made Earl Lloyd George of Dwyfor in 1944. He died a year later at Llanystumdwy near Criccieth. Although English-born, Lloyd George was a Welsh descendant, a Welsh speaker, a lifelong Welsh nationalist, – and the only Welshman ever to hold the office of Prime Minister of Great Britain.
